How to Maximize Your Gaming Experience with a Desktop PC

It is not easy to tell which changes you make to your PC settings actually result in a better gameplay experience and which ones are just a waste of time. If you have been looking forward to playing the greatest PC titles of the year and now you want to get the most out of your computer, then you are at the right place. We get it; personal computers (PCs) serve many purposes, and if you did not construct your own desktop or buy a good gaming notebook, it is possible that it was not designed with gaming in mind.

Check the programmes running in the background.

Even though the current versions of Windows 10 and 11 have Game Mode enabled by default, it does not hurt to double-check by going to Preferences > Gaming > Game Mode and toggling the switch to On. Otherwise, “slimming down” Windows is not as important as you might think for playing games. Be careful to leave the pointer speed at the sixth number from the left and turn off the Enhance Pointer Accuracy option. 

With pointer precision, also known as mouse acceleration, you can speed up your mouse movements to make the pointer travel further. This has its uses, but it’s not great for games where you want to train your muscles to automatically aim at the enemy whenever they come into range. (It may be useful if you play with a trackpad or don’t have a lot of workspace, but most players disable this feature.) 

Game settings for mouse precision are preferable to Windows settings (provided your game supports them). Many gaming mouse makers include DPI-adjustable software in their specialised settings applications. You can fine-tune the experience by combining these options with the in-game intensity slider. 

Since mouse sensitivity is a matter of taste, you should experiment with various settings and investigate what other gamers suggest in order to find the one that works best for you. 

Modify Your Display Settings 

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen someone buy an expensive gaming display only to discover, a few months later, that they weren’t making use of its specialised gaming features. For smoother gameplay on a high-refresh-rate display (144 Hz or greater), you’ll need to activate that refresh rate in Windows. 

Change your refresh rate to the maximum possible in Preferences > System > Display > Advanced Display Options. You should also check out the gameplay features of your screen, such as the Overdrive setting that can drastically cut down on motion distortion. 

If your graphics device is powerful enough, you can enable super sampling in the graphics driver settings to get higher-resolution pictures. To get the most out of your HDR-capable monitor, you should also enable HDR.

Then, select a value from the dropdown menu next to Refresh Rate. To begin, pick out the fastest update rate your screen can handle. 

If the option you want is missing, it’s probably because you’re not using the correct connection. A DisplayPort connection may be required to produce the highest refresh rate for some screens; otherwise, HDMI 2.1 may be preferable.
