There’s something inherently spooky about a graveyard too, so they’re often used as backdrops in scary movies and Halloween set-ups.
They can also be fun to use in artwork, allowing you to create your spooky scenes, and learning how to draw a graveyard is the best way to do that.

How to Draw A Graveyard
Step 1
To begin this guide to drawing a graveyard, let’s start by drawing something that every graveyard will have in abundance—a tombstone.
This tombstone has straight edges and a pointed tip at the top. There will be another shape in it, and therefore RIP will be engraved on it.
Next, we’ll add some detail to the terrain around the tombstone.
This includes some sharp line shapes for the grass around it and then some long, jagged lines for the ground.
You can complete this step by drawing some sharp rocks around it and then move on to step 2.
Step 2
In this second step, we will add another tombstone to your cemetery drawing. This tombstone has a different design than the others to add some variety to the image.
The second tombstone has a rounded top with two straight ridges on the sides, and a cross is carved into it.
Once you’ve drawn that second tombstone, you can complete this step by drawing more grassy details in the area, and then it’s time for step 3!
Step 3
We will add more graveyards to the image as we continue with this guide on drawing a graveyard. First, we draw a smaller one on the left side of the image.
This will have a simpler shape, taking on the classic shape of a rounded tombstone. You can also add another cross engraved on this tombstone.
So we will put the biggest and greatest tombstone we’ve ever drawn into this guide. This one will be big and extravagant, with a statue of an angel on it.
To draw this outline for the bottom, we will use smooth lines combined with more jagged lines to create a greasy look.
As seen in the reference image, the way it’s drawn and angled, it looks like a small hill is moving up.
Now that we’ve drawn this section, we can move on to step 5, where we’ll add the final details and touches to the drawing.
This celebratory statue can be tricky to draw, so try to copy it exactly as it appears in our sample image.
It will stand on a short rectangular base, and you are ready for the next step.
Step 4
In this fourth phase, we will complete the outline for the section of land occupied by this part of your graveyard drawing.
To draw this outline for the bottom, we will use smooth lines combined with more jagged lines to create a greasy look.
As seen in the reference image, the way it’s drawn and angled, it looks like a small hill is moving up.
Now that we’ve drawn this section, we can move on to step 5, where we’ll add the final details and touches to the drawing.
Step 5
In this step of our guide to drawing a graveyard, you’ll add some final details to the background and touch up to finish before the final step.
To do this, we’ll draw a series of tombstones in the background above the hill you just drew.
We will do a little trick with perspective with this one since this row of tombstones will be a solid line.
We won’t add any details either, and this will further show some perspectives by obscuring the details.
You can complete this effect if you colorize your image. Finally, a large round moon is added over the tombstones. Once you’ve drawn it, you’re ready for the final step!
Step 6
Color can add a lot to the mood of a picture, which is why we’re going to end this graveyard drawing with some color!
Our reference image shows you how to colorize your image, and you’ll notice that we’ve kept the colors fairly dark and muted.
We used a blue tint for the sky, a matte yellow for the moon, and green and brown for the grass and ground.
We then used shades of gray for the tombstones and then tinted the tombstones in the background a dark blue to complete the effect.
